Running with Scissors

Welcome to my Weekly Running Blog

Hello fellow runners as we start a new year and for most a new set of running goals for 2024. My name is Mike Else and I am a RRCA Certified Running Coach and a Certified Personal trainer. My focus each week will be to provide a narritive on my personal journey as well as provide tips and feedback that I hope you can use to improve your training and hopefully progress you toward your goals. First and foremost, I want everyone to know that even though I have had great success in my running career, including 3 Boston Marathons and a finish at the Western States 100 mile ultra, I started out just like most reading this blog. I never ran track or cross country in high school and I barely ran at all during my college years and post college years.

After putting on a few extra pounds during my twenty's, I decided to tackle the challenge of the marathon at the young age of 33 years old. I had tried to start up running several times on my own and failed. With the help of the Team in Training non for profit organization, I was able to succeed due to the training plan and coach that was provided and a weekend running group. After the completion of that 1 race it was in my blood. For the past 20 years, there has not been a week when I did not run at least 3 days and I have completed well over 30 marathons and several 100 mile ultra finishes as well. Since becoming a Certified coach, my focus has become on helping others succeed in their running endeavors as well.

During my coaching tenure, I have coached and helped all ages and ability levels of runners. From coaching middle school runners to high school to helping couch to 5K runners and all the way through to marathon runners and beyond. I feel a certain closeness to all these runners due to having experienced everything they will encounter on their path to success. I have had all the blisters, random injuries and questions about the direction of their training that commonly happens. If you are looking for a former olympian or professional runner that is not me. However, if you are looking for a coach and advisor who has walked the walk and knows how consistent progress leads to ultimate success then I'm your guy.

Success in 2024

Follow along each week as I keep you up to date on my running journey and offer advice and tips that will help you to be successful in your training. I also will have video from time to time with special guests on various topics to help you navigate your training successfully.
